Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education

Published in 2017

Jay Timothy Dolmage

Jay combined both disability studies and institutional critique to understand how disability is constructed in higher education. He argued that disability had been portrayed as the antithesis of higher education for a long time. Negatively, it is often portrayed as a disturbance, a drain, and a problem to be solved. Most teachers aim to make abled-bodied students perfect, unlike students with disabilities because they are considered as 'failure'. The author also suggests that establishing a more inclusive school would result in better education for all students. It is important to eliminate ableism from the educational system and to make it more inclusive of all students.

Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach

Published in 2017

Nancy J. Evans, Ellen M. Broido, Kristen R. Brown, & Autumn K. Wilke

This book examines how disability is perceived in higher education and served on college campuses and how students, teachers, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served. The majority of institutions are concerned with legal access and accommodations, enabling a system of exclusion and injustice to thrive. Campus environments can be changed into more inclusive and sustainable spaces for everyone with the use of universal design and social justice. The authors consider the perspectives of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and propose methods for addressing ableism in various settings. The discussion is focused on the ideals of social justice principles. Rather than focusing on one topic such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations, it should include the entire college experience for people with disabilities.
